Reflections: The Art of George Rodrigue

George Rodrigue’s fascination with reflective surfaces began with his love for automotive design and metal signs in the 1950s and continued years later when we unveiled giant Blue Dog paintings on mirrored surfaces in children’s hospitals. This exhibition invites viewers, through reflection, to become part of his imaginary world. I’m excited to return to Baton Rouge, a city we both loved, and share this unique, vibrant installation.

Organized by the George Rodrigue Life & Legacy Foundation, Reflections at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum showcases Rodrigue’s celebrated Swamp Dogs series, portraits of Hollywood icons, and large scale Blue Dogs on metal and chrome, all interwoven with his iconic paintings of Cajun culture. Together, these pieces reveal Rodrigue’s lifelong commitment to storytelling, the emotional and healing power of art, and his deep connection to Louisiana’s landscapes, culture, and traditions.
George Rodrigue’s art invites us to slow down and look more closely, not only at the Blue Dog, but at ourselves. Reflections creates a space where visitors can explore memory, identity, and perspective through the unique ‘canvases’ of one of Louisiana’s most illustrious artists.

George Rodrigue and I have a long history in Baton Rouge, and with multiple museums. Currently, the Louisiana Art & Science Museum is hosting “REFLECTIONS: The Art of George Rodrigue.” The museum sponsored me recently for a series of tours and events surrounding this outstanding exhibition, featuring 35 original artworks on metal and canvas, most from my private collection, and ranging in date from 1970-2013.
I’m delighted and grateful that Baton Rouge came out in full force, plus many who drove in from New Orleans, Lafayette, and other cities. We enjoyed special guests from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, the New Orleans Foundation for Francophone Cultures (NOUS), Louisiana’s Old State Capitol, Entergy, and Mayor Sid Edwards himself!
Thank you, Baton Rouge! And thank you, Louisiana! I am renewed in my love for this city and state!
I also extend my gratitude to my amazing team! Curator Dana Holland-Beickert and Outreach Coordinator Heather Parker of the George Rodrigue Life & Legacy Foundation, and our number one volunteer, Douglas Magnus! This is our 22nd exhibition in nine years, and it would not be possible without them. It takes all of us, working many months behind the scenes, to make it all come together, long before the work is shipped from New Mexico to Louisiana.
And thank you to the dynamic team at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum! Baton Rouge is fortunate to have this extraordinary institution dedicated to the important work of integrating science and art in exciting exhibitions and programming, all of which is educational, entertaining, and inspiring for all ages! Today my niece and I attended one of the very best Rodrigue Tours EVER! Wendy surpassed all other presentations I’ve attended. She came full circle with the insight she delivered in her magically expressive yet commanding voice. After all these years of friendship and endless personal stories, she managed to open yet another Rodrigue door for me. I was indeed spurred on to “reflect” on the simple genius of George during this fabulous REFLECTIONS Tour. She is the carrier of his torch of passion for his art & she lights a brilliant path into the mind of the artist.
