Student Spotlight: West DeFuniak Elementary

February 2022, DeFuniak Springs, Florida.

Art teacher, Cassandra Benefield, completed this lesson with her 4th grade students prior to Wendy Rodrigue’s visit on February 14! We love the creativity of the sentences portrayed through their art!

“I read ‘Why is Blue Dog Blue?’ by George (Rodrigue) to my students to start this lesson. They had to come up with their own sentence and then illustrate where Blue Dog was and what Blue Dog was wearing so any viewer could guess the sentence just by looking at all the visual clues in their work. the sentence structure is, ‘When I ______, I paint Blue Dog ______.’

A few of my favorite sentences this year;

When I go to a party, I paint Blue Dog punch.

When I see bling, I paint Blue Dog gold.

When I think of Mary Anning, I paint Blue Dog fossil.

I have done this Blue Dog lesson with my 4th graders since my first year of teacher 6 years ago! It is always a huge hit with EVERYONE! It was a dream come true for you all to come and bring George’s Blue Dog to life for us all!”
